Some Enchanted Evening

My daughter and her aunt stayed up until 1 AM on Friday morning sewing a Hogwarts robe; then we drove to Barnes and Noble at 8 AM ish to stand in line to get our wristband and number. Belle was #12!!!!! Twelve, in all the melee that was to come.

After resting for a bit (while I worked), we had to go back to the fabric store for a few more things. Friends came over and the girls prepared their wands. Then off they went to a pre-Potter dinner while I worked.

I put on some themed clothing and went back over to Barnes and Noble, to discover my own books –WICKED 1 and WICKED 2 — in the window under a sign that read WHILE YOU’RE WAITING FOR HARRY POTTER. They were also on a table with PRETTY LITTLE DEVILS, and they were set up in 8 out of 12 shelves on an end cap. It was overwhelming.

More of my daughter’s pals all showed up for the Pottermania; their moms and I sat on the floor of the self-improvement section and offered to help browsers with their “issues.” The news trucks came; the books were purchased, and magic is in the air as little squiggles on paper take Muggles to Hogwarts.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, JK Rowling.

Pretty Little Fantasies at Comic-Con

I am very pleased to report that I will be signing my new young adult historical fantasy, THE ROSE BRIDE, with the artist and designer of the cover–none other than the wife and husband team of Kuniko and Mahlon Craft.

They also did the cover for my other ya fantasy, SPIRITED. They will be signing posters of both covers and I will be signing THE ROSE BRIDE with them, next Friday, June 27th, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Margaret Mannet’s Fine Books booth, Booth 5112.

I will post my entire schedule this weekend; suffice to say that Comic-Con would not be Comic-Con without a signing at the California Browncoats booth, this year to support Mark Sheppard’s (Badger) favorite charity, which is St. Jude’s. I have two friends whose young sons have benefited greatly from the generosity of St. Jude’s–they both have been diagnosed with pediatric brain tumors–so I am thrilled to be able to sign on behalf of this worthy cause. I will be signing Buffy and Angel books, and of course, anything you care to bring to the booth–IF you make a contribution…! Be sure to check out their beautiful special edition coffee mugs. Shiny! Browncoats Booths A7/A8, Friday, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

More to come: Zorro and Holly Black!

Catching Up…a little

I want to thank everyone who has emailed me to ask me about 1) more Pretty Little Devils novels 2) the status of the next WICKED book and 3) what is up with DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD. There is progress and I hope to have some announcements soon. I am playing catch up with responses to emails, in part due to the death of my daughter’s best friend’s grandpa. We have been trying to spend a lot of time together.

I will be teaching at the Stonecoast MFA in Creative Writing Low-Residency Program from July 11 through July 16. This will be my first trip to Maine and I’m looking forward to it. I hope to be caught up a couple of weeks after I return, and I will answer your kind emails then.

On June 29, Fred Saberhagen died. He was a wonderful writer; I loved THE DRACULA TAPE, in which Dracula presents his side of the story, pointing out the many inaccuracies and inconsistencies in Stoker’s novel. It was so wonderful that I wrote him a fan letter. I also chastised his publisher for printing an order blank for more novels on the back of the last page of the book. Cheeky college kid!

I didn’t know Fred well, but I had begun to know him a little, and his wife Joan. I’m very sorry that he’s gone.
