San Diego Comic-Con 2008!

Greetings from Nancy Holder at San Diego Comic-Con. I will be doing two signings and a reading at the con.

On July 24, from 1PM to 2 PM, I’ll be signing my new Nocturne, Son of the Shadows, in the Gold Eagle booth, #1220.

I’m so excited to announce my affiliation with Kids Need to Read, a charity I will be supporting at San Diego Comic-Con.

I don’t know if you have heard about Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog http://www.drhorrible.com/. It’s a three-part net-musical Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) created during the Hollywood writers’ strike and it’s been making the rounds all over the net. It’s now available for download for a small fee. Dr. Horrible stars Nathan Fillion, Neil Patrick Harris, and Felicia Day. A mad scientist, a love triangle, and lots of singing–what’s not to love?

Each year at Comic-Con, the California Browncoats, fans of the Joss Whedon TV show Firefly and its spin-off movie, Serenity, support the chosen charity of a Firefly cast member. They have raised over $25,000 for charity since June 2007.

This year, they are supporting Kids Need to Read, on behalf of Nathan Fillion, who starred as Captain Malcolm Reynolds. Dark Horse Comics has created a special limited edition 5000-copy Serenity comic for the Browncoats to sell at Comic-Con; and all proceeds will go to Kids Need to Read, to purchase library books for schools across the country.

The Browncoats will also hold raffles for scripts, photos, T-shirts, and other items, many of them signed. And I’ll be signing in the California Browncoats Booth on Thursday, July 24, from noon to 1 PM to show my support (Tables A7 & A8; just look for all the Chinese lanterns!) I will offer a free copy of Son of the Shadows to anyone who purchases a raffle ticket.

On Sunday, July 27, my eleven-year-old Belle and I are participating in a Browncoats-sponsored reading to celebrate Kids Need to Read. We go on right before Felicia Day, who co-starred in Dr. Horrible and played Vi the Potential on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The reading is in room 24A from 12 to 2 PM.

Come join the fun because…Kids Need to Read!

To recap:

July 24, Noon to 1 PM, Browncoats Booth Tables A7/A8, Signing

July 24, 2 to 3 PM, Gold Eagle, #1220, Signing

July 27, noon to 2 PM, Room 24A, Reading

I had such a great evening tonight with the Clarion group at UCSD. A fabulous feast created by the students and a chance to see two friends, instructors Kelly Link and James Patrick Kelly. I gave a talk about writing tie-in fiction. Thanks, Clarion!

Business and pleasure

On a deadline, going to a party. Other freelancers will feel my schizophrenia.

Tomorrow is the booksigning with Belle. Mysterious Galaxy, 2 PM, see above.

Yesterday we passed out flyers about it at Belle’s school. I spent some of my formative years in Japan where tooting one’s own horn just is not done. As I shriveled in embarrassment at this blatant self-promotion, one of the other moms said, “Look how excited and proud she is.” After blustering an apology to her teacher when she galloped over to him and thrust one in his hand, he said, “Oh, I go to my students’ activities. I’ve been to baseball games, football games. If I can manage it, I’ll be there.” Did I mention lately that this man rocks?

So I printed out some more flyers, to take to the party tonight. I’m not going because it will be fun. I’m on a deadline, so that would be very wrong.

I’m only going to make sure everyone there knows about Belle’s booksigning.

Last night of class

Tonight was the last night of my Short Story Writing I class at UCSD. I had some great students, and we’re hoping to see STRANGER THAN FICTION together before it goes away. One of my students was Gina Trapani, of lifehacker.com. Her new book is LIFEHACKER: 88 TECH TRICKS TO TURBOCHARGE YOUR LIFE. She was interviewed today by THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. Rock, Gina!

Home and working

My daughter and I had a wonderful time in Los Angeles. Lisa Morton and Ricky Grove (IMDB him!) picked us up and off we went to Hawaii Supermarket in Alhambra to stare at durian and buy some wonderful rose tea, among other things. Then we had pad thai and other delicacies at Noodle Planet. Bobas for everyone! At our next stop, an Asian video store, Lisa amazed me with her knowledge of Chinese cinema and her great stories from her days of interviewing Tsui Hark (she is the author of THE CINEMA OF TSUI HARK.)

Belle and I got back to the hotel and eventually fell asleep. The next morning, I hosted a brunch at the Daily Grill, next to the Hilton Burbank. Lots of friends showed up: Gillian Horvath, Craig & Genny Miller, Charlotte Fullerton and Dwayne McDuffie, Eugene Son, Amy Sterling, Alan Rodgers, Lisa & Ricky, “Dez” DiGuzzetta. I think that’s everyone. Lots of shoptalk and conviviality.

Then off to Dark Delicacies for the Forbidden Planet event…with a slight detour to PetCo purchase our first hermit crab, Mr. Crabbypants. Belle had her shell signed by the FB folks, and we bought a DVD. We also gave out copies of the book containing our first collaborative short story, FURRY FANTASTIC. After that, it was visiting with Steve Jones and Mandy Slater, in town from England, and Peter Atkins, Dennis Etchison, David Schow, Roberta Lannes, and lots and lots of other LA friends.

My friend, Charlotte Fullerton, took Belle and me to Plastic Cow, the Burbank production studio. PC was finishing the popup versions of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL and CHEETAH GIRLS 2. Charlotte wrote all the popups and Belle got to watch Charlotte’s boss, Mickey, inserting the popups into CG2. Belle made an editorial suggestion–quotes around the word “brick”–and they used her suggestion. I know she will be thrilled when she comes home from her trip with her father.

The next day, Belle and I went to the Long Beach Aquarium with our friend, Abbie Bernstein. Abbie is a pop-culture journalist (and author of the book on SERENITY for Joss Whedon.) I got to know her when she began interviewing me re. BUFFY and we’ve become fast friends. We spent hours watching the otters and petting rays.

Now we’re home and I’m back on my deadlines. I’m listening to harp music and getting ready to watch Charlotte’s second TUTENSTEIN episode.

Life is good.

Welcoming a new Author:

FurryFantastic.jpgNancy and her daughter, Belle, have sold two short stories about Lightning Merriemouse-Jones, a most daring young rodent! Belle was only eight years old when “The Further Adventures of Lightning Merriemouse-Jones” was purchased for FURRY FANTASTIC, a DAW anthology. FURRY FANTASTIC was edited by Jean Rabe, Brian Thomsen, and the legendary Martin H. Greenberg, for DAW via Tekno Books. At World Fantasy 2005, Marty verified that Belle is the youngest Tekno Books author on record. Belle’s personal copy of FURRY FANTASTIC was signed by her fellow clients at the Howard Morhaim Literary Agency dinner at this year’s World Fantasy Convention, held in Austin.

PLEASE COME MEET Belle and Nancy at Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore, December 3, at 2 PM! Nancy will sign DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD and DAUGHTER OF THE SHADOWS, and Nancy and Belle will sign FURRY FANTASTIC! The address of the store is 7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., and the phone is 858-268-4747.

Here is the link for more information: Mysterious Galaxy Store Events

Hope to see you there!
